UGC Schemes to promote Community Colleges and B.Voc degrees

1. UGC Community Colleges, B.VOC Degree Programme:

UGC has started the B.Voc Degree Programmes and Community College Scheme in the XII Plan Period (2012- 2017). Indian Centre for Research and Development of Community Education (ICRDCE) received a lot of requests to have workshops in different states to sensitize the schemes of B.Voc Degree Programmes and Community College programme in Art and Science campuses from all over India.

Based on the repeated request, ICRDCE in Collaboration with various local Arts and Science Colleges organized "Workshop on Actual Functioning of B.Voc and UGC Community Colleges for State of Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana" based on the Guidelines of UGC.

The Objectives of the Workshop are:

- To sensitize and clarify the concept and guidelines of B.Voc Degree and Community College by UGC.

- Learning various aspects of Community Colleges Life-Skills, Work Skills, Industrial Partnership, Evaluation & Assessment of Skills.

- To become familiar with the sample template of the curriculum and to share our expertise together in order to prepare standardized curriculum framework.

- To evolve methods of mobility of students from Diploma to Advanced diploma and then leading to Degree Programmes,

- To make the B.Voc Degree and Community College Programmes successful,

- To understand the administration of the scheme and the allotment of funds for various items.

- To develop a mechanism of reporting - Diary of events, List of Industrial Partners, Possible MoUs or letter of consent and Utilization Certificate,

- To agree to have uniform prospectus, application and commencement of classes by August, 2014 and

- To have the Publicity of the scheme though media.

3. DEEN DAYAL UPADHYAY CENTRES FOR KNOWLEDGE ACQUISTION AND UPGRADATION OF SKILLED HUMAN ABILITIES AND LIVELIHOOD (KAUSHAL KENDRA):

The UGC has announced a new scheme of KAUSHAL KENDRAS to be established in Universities and Colleges for developing skills among the youth and creating manpower on a large scale. The scheme consists of UGC Community College, Bachelor of Vocational Degree (B.Voc) and Master of Vocational Degree (M.Voc). Many Colleges are approaching ICRDCE for clarifications regarding the scheme and guidance.

4. Workshop conducted on KAUSHAL Kendra:

ICRDCE, Chennai in Collaboration with Lady Doak College, Madurai organised "Workshop on UGC Scheme on KAUSHAL KENDRA Proposal 2014-2014 - An Introduction and Clarification" on 14th March 2015, at Madurai in which 83 participants of 37 Institutions from 5 States of India participated.

5. Interface Meeting - UGC Community Colleges & B.Voc Centres:

A. An interface meeting on Review, Evaluation and Action Plan for UGC Community Colleges & B.Voc Centres in Tamilnadu on 20th & 21st August, 2015, was held in collaboration with Jayaraj Annapackiam College for Women (Autonomous), Periyakulam. 34 participants from 16 Colleges participated in this workshop.

B. A similar workshop was held for the Kerala Colleges on 15th September, 2015, in collaboration with St. Mary's College, Thrissur. Ms. Garima Babbar, Associate Standards and QA, NSDC, Dr. Sandhya Chintala, Executive Director, IT-ITeS Sector Skills Council, Vice President, NASSCOM, Mr. Ashish Jain, CEO, Health Sector Skill Council interacted with the participants clarifying their doubts and apprehensions and clarifications and regarding UGC, NSDC and SSCs. There were 65 participants from 35 colleges who took part in this workshop.

C. An interface meeting on Review, Evaluation and Action Plan for UGC Community Colleges & B.Voc Centres for the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on 29th September, 2015, was held in collaboration with Mount Carmel College, Bangalore. 41 participants from 17 Colleges participated in this workshop.

D. An interface meeting on Review, Evaluation and Action Plan for UGC Community Colleges, B.Voc Centres and KAUSHAL Kendras for the states of Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on 30th March, 2016 was organized by ICRDCE, Chennai in collaboration with Loyola College, Chennai. In which 64 participants from 35 Colleges and Universities participated.
