11. CCID – FEBRUARY 2010

Director of ICRDCE attended and presented a paper on “Skills Development through Community College” at the Community Colleges for International Development (CCID ) 34th Annual Conference “Community Colleges: Architects of Global Prosperity” at Houston, U.S.A. on February, 2010.

12. SHAPING THE FUTURE: MEXICO CONFERENCE – MAY 2010

The Director of ICRDCE attended “Shaping the future: Conference on Networking of Jesuit Higher Education for Globalized World” from 21st to 25th of April at Mexico, in which the Director of ICRDCE represented in the Panel Discussion for Asia. 250 Participants attended.

13. Director of ICRDCE attended Conference on Jesuit Higher Education from 21st to 25th of August 2010, the Theme: Networking Jesuit Higher Education for the Globalizing World, at Mexico.

14. 250 Rectors and Representatives of Jesuit universities around the world, gathered together at Mexico city for the World Congress in the presence of very Rev. Fr. General Adolfo Nicolas, S.J.

15. Director of ICRDCE attended The Sixth Pan-commonwealth Forum on Open Learning organized by IGNOU, Kochi, Kerala. Paper presented on “Towards Social Justice through the Community College Movement”, 24th to 28th November 2010.  

16. Director of ICRDCE conducted the Workshop on “Community College Movement in India” on 21st of February 2011 at Symbiosis International Conference on Open and Distance Learning, Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning, Pune in which 200 representative from 25 countries participated.  

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES - IIE Visit
Dr. Xavier Alphonse, S.J., have selected by the Institute of International Education (IIE), New Delhi and Embassy of the United States of America, New Delhi for a study trip to U.S. from the 22nd - 31st March, 2014 to visit Community Colleges in Washington, D.C. Seattle and New York. He led the team which has representatives from Arunachel Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Nagaland.

Outcome of the Visit
•  Evaluation and assessment of skills workshop
•  Curriculum development workshops for specific skills workshops
•  Training of administrators, general orientation on the Community College system
•  Industrial institution partnership training workshops
•  Workshops can be conducted in India with experts from U.S.A. 12 workshops (three days per workshop), Southern, Central and Northern regions of India. US Community College experts can come from these four Colleges. They should be not only scholars of particular domain but should have sensitive knowledge about the Indian reality. Funds have to be raised from Benevolent Foundations through joint projects between the Colleges and ICRDCE. Foundations have been laid and contact persons have been identified in all the Colleges.

SOUTH & EAST AFRICAN COUNTRIES

1. International Conference on Community College System in India, organised by Catholic Institute of Education (CIE), Johannesburg, South Africa, 30th and 31st of August 2004.

3. ICRDCE has created ten Community Colleges in East Africa and South Africa. The book on Life-coping skills “We Shall Overcome” written by Fr. Xavier Alphonse has been translated into Afrikaners language with the title “ONS SAL OORWIN” Vaardighede om die lewe te hanteer (433 pages) and prescribed as a textbook approved by the Government of South Africa. The ICRDCE has trained 50 teachers from South Africa and East Africa from June 2005.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA (PNG)

The Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) (PNG is an island near Australia) has decided to start Community College system. In this context Mr. Thomas Doehrman, Special Envoy of PNG government has visited a few Community Colleges in Chennai. The Papua New Guinea Government has accepted the Community College system at the policy level and has made commitment to establish 75 Community Colleges in the next five years. 13 Community Colleges will come up in 2008 with the Government funding. The entire Government including the Honorable Prime Minister are involved in the scheme.

ICRDCE and the director have been appointed as the Consultant to the Honorable Prime Minister of Papua New guinea (PNG) for the creation of 13 Community colleges in 2008 under the scheme "Inclusiveness in Education for National Development through the Community Colleges".

2. WORKSHOPS IN PNG IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2009

ICRDCE conducted two days workshop on the PNG model of Community College system on 14th and 15th of October, 2009 in Caritas Technical School. 95 participants attended the workshop from two regions of Southern Region and Neugini Islands. Another workshop of same kind was conducted in the Province of Lae in the Lae Technical College on the 16th and 17th of the same month. 114 participants attended the workshop and benefited from it. We got 27 proposals from Southern Region, 10 from Neugini Islands, 14 from Momase Region, and 41 proposals from Highlands Region. The Committee decided to choose one third of the proposals to start Community College on the 18th of January, 2010. That is 30 Community Colleges will be functioning from Jan, 2010. From Each community college selected atleast one representative preferably the Director or the Deputy Director would be selected and sent to Chennai for 10 days of Intensive training and field visits. The students' assistance will be given to these colleges. 3000 kina per student admitted into the community College for the Community colleges in Metro Cities, 2500 kina for the colleges in the Semi Urban localities and 2000 kina for the colleges in the village areas.

3. MEETING WITH PM OF PNG – 2009

Fr. Xavier Alphonse and the ICRDCE team met the Prime minister on 18th and 19th of October 2009 and briefed him the latest developments and the success of the Workshop both in Portmorseby and Lae. The Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare was very happy to note all the details and he expressed and promised his total support to the Community College system and he thanked Fr. Xavier Alphonse for all the efforts the Indian team is taking to make the Community College System very successful in PNG.

4. THE CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP – PNG, 2009

An Eight Members expert Committee head by Dr, Xavier Alphonse, S.J., traveled to PNG and conducted a three day workshop on Curriculum Development for all officials and PNG Education Department. The Workshop was organizated by Community College Secretariat of PNG by Mr. Benjamin, Director of the Secretariate, in which 28 participants attended from 2nd to 5th of December 2009. The team was very much involved in evolving the curriculum for 28 trades and in the training of teachers of Community Colleges that would take off immediately on 18th of January 2010.

5. BISHOP CONFERENCE PNG – APRIL 2010

The Director of ICRDCE was invited to address the bishops in the Bishop's Conference of PNG and Solomon Island and Reviewed the Community College activities in PNG from 13th to 17th of April 2010.


6. The ICRDCE team went to Singapore to have a review of the community colleges in PNG on the 14th & 15th of January 2011 in which the Honourable Minister for Education Mr. James Marape, Education Secretary and the Director of the Community College Secretariat participated with the other officials. We planned together to have 35 community colleges by 2012.

7. Fr. M. S. Jacob, S.J., the Deputy Director of ICRDCE, Chennai went to PNG for evaluation of the project from 20th of February to 20th of March 2011 at the invitation of the Education Minister Honourable James Marape. He visited all the 10 parallel stream community colleges and all the De-Novo sites that are earmarked for starting Community College.

USA - INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL (STUDENT) EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

Two Students have been selected by the US Consulate of Chennai for the international educational exchange program. This programme enables individuals from selected countries to study at a Community College in United States to develop professional skills. This programme is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of Sate. The following students have been selected:

These students will be studying in a Community Colleges in USA and their entire expenses will be met by the Government of USA.
